I absolutely loved the X-Files when I was growing up and if it’s even possible, I think I love it more even now. Though, I’ll admit I don’t remember it being as funny as it was during this week’s episode in which, yes, Mulder and Scully Meet a were-monster. Actually, to be fair, only Mulder meets the were-monster. Misleading! Scully does perhaps come within several feet, so maybe that counts. What was the unexpected twist this episode? Read on, courageous x-plorer!

FBI very special agent Fox Mulder sits at his desk and laments the time he has wasted chasing various alleged monsters during his career. Many of them were hoaxes. As luck would have it, Agent Scully walks into his office with their newest assignment, a supposed monster.

As the case progresses, the evidence suggests the attacker might be a 6 foot lizard with human teeth. Mulder gets back in the groove and believes in monsters again. Scully likes this version of Mulder much more. Not that she believes what he is theorizing, but she likes this more confident Mulder.

What was the twist? Well, I guess there were two. One is that the actually murderer was a human being. The animal control officer we meet at the beginning of the episode. The more significant twist is that the monster turns out not to be a human being who turns into a giant lizard when the moon is full, but rather, he (it?) is a giant lizard (or self-described non-lizard) who turned into a human being when he was bitten by the human animal control officer/murderer. Mulder meets the were-monster, named “Guy Mann,” and at first disbelieves the whole story. His faith in himself is shaken once more. A lizard who turned into a man? He realizes that while it sounds crazy, it is no crazier than a man who turns into a giant lizard. Both are ridiculous. Scully, the ever level-headed one, tracked down the real killer. All by herself. Without back-up. Dangerous! Though, not for Scully who can apparently handle herself with ease.

However, as Mulder almost saves the day to rescue Scully from the killer, he realizes that Guy’s story fits the facts of the case. The animal control officer bit his victims. He must’ve also bit Guy.

Mulder returns to the forest and chats with Guy. Guy reveals that he will soon go back into hibernation. For the next 10,000 years!! My wild theory: he is a dinosaur descendant of some kind. Anyway, as Guy turns back into a lizard or dinosaur, he and Mulder shake hands. (pictured above) Guy is glad to have met a friendly human being. Mulder says he was likewise glad to have met Guy, since Guy reinstated his belief in the paranormal.

So, what did you guys think? During the original run, I tended to like the monster-of-the-week episodes more than the myth-arc ones. Was this week’s episode funnier than the ones from the original run? Or maybe the original run eps were pretty funny too.
